We have found over the last couple years that feeding the herd just before tagging a calf distracts most of the cows, sometimes even the mother, so when the calf makes that sound that means all hands on deck and man your battle stations to any cow in the herd they are usually distracted enough that they don't respond. We also try to get a gate closed between the cows and the calf, this is the best way to avoid the close encounter. Ed
