Your feeding regime and feed quality during pregnancy will affect calf size and cow condition at calving. If cows are overfed with high quality forage, supplement grains, etc. the calf will grow larger and the cows can be fatter than they whold be for calving. The result is dystocia(difficult birth). Overweight cows will have excess fat in the pelvic area that prevents or makes difficult the passage of the calf. Our calves are overall smaller and cows thinner this spring and have had no birthing problems from 40 births so far. Calves remain very healthy and active.
